Friends of Cathedral Music

Enriching the life of the Cathedral of St. John and the broader Albuquerque community through the promotion of music to the glory of God.

Music & Praise

OUR MISSION

The mission of Friends of Cathedral Music is “to enrich the life of the Cathedral of St. John and the broader Albuquerque community through the promotion of music to the glory of God.” It does this by sponsoring concerts by regionally, nationally, and internationally-renowned ensembles and solo artists in our beautiful sacred space, and by facilitating and helping to underwrite expenses related to the Cathedral choirs’ presentation of sacred choral masterworks which exceed the normal bounds of the Cathedral’s rich liturgical life. Occasionally Friends of Cathedral Music also commissions new musical settings of liturgical texts, thus enriching the sacred music repertoire available to the church at large, and contributing to the ongoing legacy of the Cathedral of St. John and the world we serve.

Concerts & Special Services

OUR 2024-2025 SEASON

This 31st Friends of Cathedral Music season, we have the privilege of presenting artists from across this nation, including the local Celtic Folk group The Reelersthe Young-Tiranno duo with pianist Natasha Stojanovska; and the internationally-acclaimed vocal chamber ensemble New York Polyphony. Our 2024 commissioned composer is Dr. David Hurd, one of the world’s most visible and successful African-American composers. Violinist Stephen Redfield leads the FCM orchestra along with a professional vocal octet in three concerts focusing on the cantatas of Johann Sebastian Bach. Dallas-based harpist, Emily Levin, joins the Cathedral Choirs for Christmas Lessons & Carols and Christmas Eve. We present music for Piano Quartet by four highly talented New Mexican women performers; a performance by LYRRA, part of the VOCES8 Foundation, six exceptional women vocalists who seek to redefine what is possible for upper voices; and a recital by Princeton University Organist Eric Plutz, who performs a program of French symphonic composer Louis Vierne. Our season concludes with a free concert offered by the touring members of the Cathedral Choirs, who will sing a weekend of services at Christ Church Cathedral, Victoria, B. C., Canada.
