Music by Florence Price, Jessie Montgomery, and Francisco Mora

Camerata del Sol is a flexible-sized professional chamber music ensemble based in the Las Cruces / El Paso area. Camerata’s mission is to bring rarely-heard works to life, to have a diverse ensemble and audience, and to make their concerts affordable and accessible to working families, students, and senior citizens. Since its founding in 2017, Camerata has performed over 150 concerts in the Southwest region, including small-scale “driveway serenades” during the initial year of the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2022, Camerata was awarded the Challenge America grant from the National Endowment for the Arts for their program highlighting the compositions of Baroque women composers. Since 2022, Camerata has performed for various regional concert presenters, including El Paso Pro Musica, Otero Arts, Sierra Arts Council, Friends of Cathedral Music series at the Episcopal Cathedral of St. John in Albuquerque, NM, and the Presidential Chamber Music Series at Western New Mexico University and New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology.

Camerata is thrilled to present this program of Black composers in honor of Black History Month. For the Piano Quintet in A minor by Florence Price, Camerata is joined by award-winning pianist Alejandro Barrañón. Mr. Barrañón’s numerous accomplishments include receiving the Hermilo Novelo Award (1984), and winning first prize in the following competitions: First Competition for Young Soloists (Chamber Orchestra of Fine Arts, 1984); Pianist Sala Chopin (1985); Michel Block (from UNAM, 1987); and The National Competition for Young Soloists of the Symphony Orchestra of the State of Mexico (1987). Mr. Barrañón maintains an international solo and chamber music career, having performed at various forums and festivals in Austria, the United Kingdom, Algeria, the United States, Costa Rica, Cuba, and Mexico.
